Sister Geraldine Macnamera, Born In Toronto, 1938. At University Of Manitoba She Received Her Ba In 1959, Her Certificate In Education In 1960, And B.Ed. In 1965. She Was President Of Alpha Delta Phi. She Taught At Norberry School In St. Vital, Winnipeg. She Entered The Sisters Of The Holy Names Of Jesus And Mary And After 2 Years Of Study In Montreal She Returned To Teach High School For 7 Years In Winnipeg, Flin Flon And St. Boniface. In 1971 She Resumed Studies In Law At U Of Manitoba, And Articled At Legal Aid Specializing In Criminal Law. Llb. Was Awarded To Her In 1974. She Worked With Inner City Youth And Established A Centre For Them Which In January 1976 Opened As Rossbrook House. Staff At Rossbrook Were Drawn From The Youth Of The Area. They Provided Recreation, Education, Training, Employment, Vocational And Legal Counselling. She Served On Anti-Sniff Coalition, On Canada Works Projects, Chamber Of Commerce Core Area Labour Training Board, Law Reform Commission, Nor'West Health Clinic. In 1978 She Was Named "Native Citizen Of The Year" The First Non-Native Person Thus Honoured. In 1983 She Received U Of Manitoba'S Distinguished Service Award; The Solicitor General'S Crime Prevention Award; And The Order Of Canada. She Died At 45 Yars On Feb. 20, 1984. A Playground Was Named After Her, And An Inner City Scholarship Fund Was Set Up In 1985 In Her Name. Macnamara Hall At University Of Winnipeg Which Houses A Child Care Worker Program Was Opened In 1986 In Her Honour |
